Adrian Geering is TEC Australia’s longest serving Chair and multi-award recipient.
He founded TEC 13 in 1989 and he’s built it to be a high-performing group of business leaders and owners of some of South Australia’s most successful enterprises, many with global reach and with combined sales of about $5 billion and approximately 18,000 employees.
Adrian invited me to Australia to speak to his group on the topic of Accountability, and, while there, I had the privilege of speaking to other groups of business leaders throughout Australia and New Zealand.
The leaders that Adrian and other TEC and Vistage Chairs around the world work with are responsible for significant decisions affecting the lives of literally thousands of other people.
We are reminded that with great responsibility comes great accountability, and Adrian tells this story about one of his group members. The events described by Adrian also remind us quite pointedly that the New Year is a good time to ensure your important life and business matters are always up-to-date and in order.
The Green Box
Jim McArthur was a member of TEC Australia, the private peer advisory board for founders, Managing Directors, CEOs, presidents and partners.
Jim’s father John was also a TEC member. John called his son Jim to let him know that he’d be flying to New Zealand the next day to close an important business deal. Jim, a pilot in the Air Guard Reserves, warned his father that potential typhoons could make travel hazardous. John laughed and reminded Jim that if anything tragic happened to remember to get the Green Box out of the closet in his bedroom.
The next day, John was killed when his plane crashed into the side of a mountain on the north island in very low visibility.
Several days after the funeral, Jim remembered his father’s words about the Green Box. He called his mother and they brought the Green Box to the family attorney. Inside, they found 28 envelopes.
