One hundred years ago this month the Panama Canal opened, making it possible for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Isthmus of Panama in half the time previously required.
The 77.1 kilometer (48 mi) canal took more than a decade to complete and was considered the largest and most difficult engineering project ever undertaken.
